State Department OKs Italy’s FMS Request for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles

The State Department has approved Italy’s foreign military sales request for Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles with an estimated value of $211 million.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said RTX will serve as the principal contractor for the potential FMS. The DSCA has also notified Congress of the proposed deal.

Scope of Proposed Foreign Military Sale

Italy intends to purchase 30 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs, 40 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs and two AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM guidance sections. The possible deal also covers the procurement of non-MDE items, particularly AMRAAM control section spares and containers, spare and repair parts, consumables, accessories and repair and return support, weapon system support and software, and classified and unclassified software delivery and support.

In addition, the proposed transaction will include classified and unclassified publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, government and contractor engineering, technical and logistical support services, and other elements of logistics and program support.

The request, which does not require the government or the contractor to send representatives to Italy, is intended to strengthen the nation’s defense with the addition of modern air-to-air munitions.
